Historical Context & Significance
Lacking all-ages music venues in the arid Coachella Valley, teenagers in Palm Desert hauled gasoline-powered generators, Ampeg bass stacks, and drum kits out into the sand dunes of the Mojave Desert. Playing marathon psychedelic jams under the desert stars, Kyuss—featuring guitarist Josh Homme, bassist Brant Bjork, and vocalist John Garcia—birthed the heavy, groove-laden sound that came to be known as desert rock.
Guided by producer Chris Goss of Masters of Reality, Kyuss recorded the monumental albums Blues for the Red Sun and Welcome to Sky Valley. Homme's revolutionary guitar tone—plugging an Ovation electric guitar directly into an Ampeg SVT bass amplifier and tuning down two whole steps to C standard—created a tectonic wall of fuzz.
Following the acrimonious 1995 breakup of Kyuss, Homme formed Queens of the Stone Age. By embracing danceable polyrhythms, robotic repetition, and eclectic collaborators (including Mark Lanegan and Dave Grohl), QOTSA evolved from underground desert lore into modern rock royalty, culminating in the 2009 supergroup Them Crooked Vultures alongside Grohl and Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones.
