Dischord to Jawbox to Burning Airlines
The 90s Post-Hardcore & D.C. Indie Evolution in 6 Hops
From the strict DIY basement ethics of Dischord Records to major label intrigue at Atlantic and back to underground perfection, trace J. Robbins' defining post-hardcore journey.
Historical Context & Significance
In 1989, Washington D.C.'s underground punk scene had moved past the blazing tempos of original hardcore into a textured, polyrhythmic post-hardcore frontier. At the center of this metamorphosis stood J. Robbins, who stepped away from Government Issue to form Jawbox with bassist Kim Coletta. Releasing their landmark debut Grippe on Ian MacKaye's Dischord Records, Jawbox honed an angular, propulsive sound that soon caught the ear of major labels during the post-Nevermind signing spree.
Their controversial signing to Atlantic Records yielded two monumental albums—For Your Own Special Sweetheart (1994) and Jawbox (1996)—proving that independent ethics could survive the corporate machine without compromising artistic bite. Following Jawbox's 1997 dissolution, Robbins reunited with Jawbox drummer Peter Moffett to form Burning Airlines, crafting razor-sharp, cerebrally political post-punk on their seminal 1999 debut Mission: Control!.
Along the way, Robbins launched DeSoto Records and became one of independent music's most prolific recording engineers at Magpie Cage Studios, completing a vital arc that connected 80s Dischord purism with the modern architecture of American indie rock.
